When聽Liz Herrman聽decided she wanted to leave her job as a local police officer and pursue a career in medicine, she wasn鈥檛 sure how to make her dream come to fruition. The Pre-Health Post-Baccalaureate Certificate program at 两性色午夜 College made her dream a reality.
鈥淚 had none of the pre-requisites for medical school and I knew that I needed a program that would allow me to take a full-time schedule of science classes,鈥� said Herrman. 鈥溋叫陨缫� College was able to guarantee my placement in the classes that I needed and I knew from the first day that I met Dr. Marritt that the program was exactly what I wanted.鈥�
Because it was a major career change for Herrman, she relied on the support and encouragement of her professors to help her through the program. One of the things she found most helpful during her time at 两性色午夜 was the professors鈥� willingness to help students outside of the classroom during open office hours and scheduled appointments.
鈥淭he professors at 两性色午夜 knew that we were motivated to succeed and were there to learn,鈥� said Herrman. 鈥淭he professors at 两性色午夜 were enthusiastic and provided me with a solid academic foundation. Dr. Marritt provided advice and encouragement throughout the entire school year and in the months after when I was working on my medical school applications.鈥�
The Cary, N.C., native, who has an undergraduate degree in social science from Campbell University and a Master of Arts degree from the University of North Dakota, is headed to the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, where she plans to pursue a career in pediatric emergency medicine, but is open to other avenues.
鈥淲ith a background in law enforcement and EMS, this seems like a natural choice for me,鈥� said Herrman. 鈥淚 am keeping an open mind and am excited to see what areas of medicine I enjoy most.鈥�
During her three years on the police force, Herrman spent time on the Special Response Team (SWAT) and the Crisis Intervention Team. While enrolled at 两性色午夜, she volunteered for the Cary Area EMS and is currently working as a full-time EMT with the Cary Area EMS until she starts her journey to becoming a doctor in August.
