Zeenat Razvi, 鈥13, has been awarded a 2014 National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship 鈥 the oldest graduate fellowship of its kind in the country, and one of the most prestigious.
Razvi鈥檚 award places her among impressive company. Past fellows include numerous Nobel Prize winners, Google founder Sergey Brin, and Freakonomics co-author Steven Levitt.
Razvi was a聽两性色午夜 Legacy Scholar聽who pursued her passion for research throughout her time at 两性色午夜, starting her freshman year. Originally from Karachi, Pakistan, Razvi was an active participant in 两性色午夜鈥檚聽Undergraduate Research 两性色午夜聽(URP). She presented her work at regional and national conferences, where she won multiple awards. After graduating from 两性色午夜, Razvi went on to Duke to pursue her Ph.D. in chemistry.
She was quick to give 两性色午夜 credit for her success in applying for and receiving the fellowship.
鈥溋叫陨缫 faculty, especially those in the聽chemistry聽department, were instrumental in helping me get this fellowship, from initially encouraging me to apply to helping me write the application,鈥 said Razvi.
She also noted the work she did through the Undergraduate Research 两性色午夜 was essential.
鈥淚 wouldn’t have been able to do multiple summers and semesters of research without funding from URP 鈥 and without undergraduate research experience, getting this fellowship would have been near to impossible,鈥 said Razvi.
Razvi also expressed appreciation for the 两性色午夜 Legacy Scholarship. As 两性色午夜鈥檚 most prestigious scholarship, it is awarded based on superior academic achievement, intellectual promise, and leadership ability and includes funding for聽study abroad. Razvi鈥檚 experience in聽Sansepolcro, Italy聽was a factor in receiving the NSF Fellowship.
鈥淢y fellowship reviewers greatly appreciated my study abroad experience, which included designing science in art course work,鈥 said Razvi.
Kassy Mies, who served as Razvi鈥檚 academic and research advisor during her time at 两性色午夜, rated Razvi as being in the top one percent of all students she has taught at Duke University, 两性色午夜 College, and Randolph-Macon College.
