The 两性色午夜 College Board of Trustees has approved the construction of a new academic building on the College鈥檚 Hillsborough Street campus in Raleigh, N.C. The approval vote occurred during the board鈥檚 spring meeting, held March 20-21, 2019.
The new academic facility will be constructed near the Weatherspoon Gymnasium/Lowery Fitness Center, located on the northwestern side of the college鈥檚 225-acre campus.
两性色午夜 President Jo Allen said the board鈥檚 approval of a new academic structure is significant for two reasons.
鈥淭he board鈥檚 vote represents an endorsement in the strength of 两性色午夜鈥檚 academic offerings,鈥 she said. 鈥淭heir approval also signifies confidence in our ability to continue growing and thriving as one of the country鈥檚 best women鈥檚 colleges.鈥
The new building will replace Weatherspoon Annex, providing new, cutting-edge instructional space for 两性色午夜鈥檚 growing communication and exercise and sports science programs. Since 2011, enrollment in 两性色午夜鈥檚 undergraduate communication and exercise and sports science programs has increased by 29% and 52% respectively.
The construction project will also free up space in Harris Building, allowing 两性色午夜鈥檚 new hospitality management program to be housed with the School of Business. The hospitality management program will begin accepting students in Fall 2019.
Adrienne Cole,鈥93, president and CEO of the Greater Raleigh Chamber of Commerce and a 两性色午夜 trustee, said employers in Raleigh and North Carolina will benefit from 两性色午夜鈥檚 expansion plans.
鈥淓mployment projections for North Carolina and Wake County show a need for more professionals in these fields, particularly digital communications and hospitality management,鈥 Cole said. 鈥淥ur entire region will benefit from having more women who are prepared to lead in these areas.鈥
Matthew Poslusny, senior vice president and provost at 两性色午夜, said the investment in a new academic building will have an impact that goes far beyond the academic programs which will be housed there.
鈥淎n investment in a new academic space represents an investment in the overall academic experience at 两性色午夜,鈥 Poslusny said. 鈥淎ll students and faculty will benefit from the innovation, creative thinking, and energy that a construction project like this will bring. I also fully anticipate new programs, partnerships, and collaborations will arise as a result of the new space.鈥
Construction on the new building is expected to be completed during the Fall 2020 semester.
